Nourishing Minds, Building Futures
The School Feeding Program in Egypt has witnessed solid certified footsteps over the past ten years with the academic supervision of The Ministry of Agriculture and The Institute of High Food Technology. Education is highly prized by Egyptians, and most parents will send their children to school regardless of the sacrifices they may have to make.
In the poorest governorates of Egypt, where levels of poverty reach the highest in the country, the meager incomes of the very poor are barely enough to meet families' basic food needs. Insufficient food consumption, compounded by poor hygiene, disease, and inappropriate dietary habits, has brought about a significant level of malnutrition among children.

Transforming Lives Through Nutrition
The "School Feeding Project in Egypt" started in 2001, complementing the government's effort in areas where the poorest families live by ensuring children attending primary school receive a school meal every school day of the year.
Through Technical Assistance provided by The Ministry of Agriculture, leading experts assist the Government of Egypt to deliver daily nutritious food, all year round, to over 3,000,000 primary school boys and girls in the poorest regions of the country.
In 2010, over 300 million date/raisin pies were prepared and baked in special purpose-built government factories that are supported by the project. These snacks were delivered fresh throughout the school year in the governorates supported by The Ministry of Agriculture.
The snacks are tasty and rich in essential nutrients, and are prepared under strict hygiene and safety conditions to ensure the highest standards for the children.

Creating Opportunities Beyond Nutrition

Job opportunities are being created for local people in the bakeries, many of whom are young women.
All new recruits receive training on food technology and food processing.
All employees in the bakery facilities can access on-site health care and health advice.
Addressing National Food Security
The Egyptian Bread Crisis hit Egypt as a result of overpopulation and the breakdown of any defenses capable of overcoming the subsidized flour black market epidemic.
Speakers of Egyptian colloquial Arabic use the same word, عيش ('aish), for both "bread" and "life". Indeed, bread represents on average around 50–60% of Egyptians' caloric intake and is the perennial complement to every meal.
Through our partnership with the Ministry of Military Production, we've established more than 39 complete Pita Bread lines to address the crisis, ensuring affordable bread availability for the Egyptian population at less than one dollar cent per loaf.

We strongly believe that the provision of regular school meals over the entire school year is a fundamental requirement to ensure effects on attendance, nutrition, and learning are maintained. Through our programs, we're not just feeding children—we're investing in Egypt's future.
